Relative to other breeds
As an original hunting breed, the Podenco Andaluz has been selected for extreme robustness, which is why no breed-specific hereditary diseases affect its profile. Nevertheless, buyers should be aware of general orthopedic risks such as hip dysplasia (HD) and patellar luxation, which can occasionally occur in active dogs of this size. Since the breed has been spared from extreme breeding trends, it is in an excellent state of health.

What matters most
Especially with a Podenco Andaluz, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
A Podenco Andaluz leads a double life: indoors, they are a heat-loving cat that disappears invisibly under blankets; outdoors, they mutate into a target-seeking rocket on four paws. You aren't getting a classic follower of commands, but a highly sensitive free spirit. If you can safely manage their hunting instinct, they will offer you a gentle, almost tender bond that is addictive.

The Andalusian Podenco is an intelligent and independent hunting dog that requires a lot of mental and physical activity. In training, it often shows a strong will and independence, which is why patience and consistency are especially important. Unlike the Labrador or German Shepherd, which are usually very eager to work and focused on cooperation, the Podenco needs a sensitive and varied approach to stay motivated. Retrieving games or classic obedience exercises are possible but should be designed to be playful and entertaining to avoid boredom. The Podenco particularly benefits from scent work, search games, and hunting activities that correspond to its natural instinct. Frustration tolerance is also an important point here, as the dog can quickly become blocked under too much pressure. A positive, reward-based training method is essential to build a trusting bond. The Andalusian Podenco is not a dog for passive owners – it needs clear structures but also freedom to express its independence. Those who are willing to invest time and creativity in training will gain an alert, lively, and loyal companion who goes through life with a lot of fun and energy.
Podenco Andaluz: The Podenco Andaluz is an active and agile hunting dog that requires a balanced diet to support its energy. High-quality food with a good proportion of proteins and nutrients is important to maintain its musculature and promote its vitality. Be careful to avoid overfeeding, as the Podenco remains slim but still needs to maintain a healthy weight. The short, dense coat of the Podenco Andaluz is easy to care for and only requires occasional brushing to remove loose hairs and keep the skin healthy. During the shedding season in spring and autumn, increased hair loss can occur, which can be reduced by regular brushing. The Podenco Andaluz is well adapted to the Mediterranean climate but also copes with the changeable conditions in Germany. In cold temperatures, its coat offers some protection; nevertheless, additional protection should be provided in cold and wet weather. In summer, it is important to ensure sufficient shade and water to prevent overheating.
| Care Level Occasional brushing is all it takes. | Very low-maintenance |
| Exercise Needs Needs several hours of serious exercise every day. | Very active |
