Relative to other breeds
As a brachycephalic breed, the Petit Brabançon frequently suffers from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS), which can significantly impair daily breathing. There is also an increased risk of the painful neurological condition syringomyelia, as well as patellar luxation. Since there are few reliable genetic tests available for these breed-specific issues, selective breeding is particularly challenging and carries a higher degree of risk.

What matters most
Especially with a Petit Brabançon, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

Originally from Belgium, the Petit Braban"on is one of three variations of the Belgian Griffons, along with the Brussels Griffon and the Belgian Griffon. They share a common history and are descended from small, wire-haired dogs that were used to hunt rats and mice in stables and stables in Belgium in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time, these small dogs became more and more popular, both for their practical utility and for their charming personalities and attractive looks. They were particularly valued by the Belgian Queen Marie Henriette, who contributed to the development of today's breeds by adding small imported smooth-coated dogs such as the King Charles Spaniel and the Pug to the original Belgian stable dogs. The Petit Braban"on was then named after the Belgian province of Brabant, home of the Queen. The Petit Braban"on as we know it today was recognized as a separate breed in 1880, with the main difference from the other two Griffon breeds being the texture and color of its coat.
The Petit Brabançon was originally used to combat rats in stables and households and later developed into a companion dog.
