History
Originally from Belgium, the Petit Braban"on is one of three variations of the Belgian Griffons, along with the Brussels Griffon and the Belgian Griffon. They share a common history and are descended from small, wire-haired dogs that were used to hunt rats and mice in stables and stables in Belgium in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over time, these small dogs became more and more popular, both for their practical utility and for their charming personalities and attractive looks. They were particularly valued by the Belgian Queen Marie Henriette, who contributed to the development of today's breeds by adding small imported smooth-coated dogs such as the King Charles Spaniel and the Pug to the original Belgian stable dogs. The Petit Braban"on was then named after the Belgian province of Brabant, home of the Queen. The Petit Braban"on as we know it today was recognized as a separate breed in 1880, with the main difference from the other two Griffon breeds being the texture and color of its coat.

Wir haben uns ganz bewusst für einen Petit Brabançon entschieden, weil wir einen sportlichen, aber kompakten Hund gesucht haben. Unser Rüde ist extrem agil, unkompliziert und läuft problemlos auch längere Strecken beim Wandern mit. Er ist absolut freiatmend und hat im Alltag überhaupt keine Konditionsprobleme, was uns bei der Auswahl sehr wichtig war. Im Haus verhält er sich ruhig und schmust für sein Leben gern.
Allerdings sollte man die Rasse nicht unterschätzen. Er ist zwar klein, hat aber eine enorme Ausdauer und ist sehr wachsam. Wenn Fremde an der Tür vorbeigehen, schlägt er sofort Alarm. Zudem neigt er manchmal zu einem kleinen Schnarchen im Schlaf, was wohl an der mopsähnlichen Anatomie liegt. Insgesamt ist er aber ein toller, fitter Begleiter für aktive Menschen.

Meine Hündin Hilde ist eine echte Persönlichkeit mit einem fast menschlichen Gesichtsausdruck, der jeden sofort verzaubert. Sie ist extrem anhänglich, intelligent und lernt Tricks im Handumdrehen. Für mich ist sie der perfekte Wohnungshund, da sie sehr anpassungsfähig ist und am liebsten den ganzen Tag in meiner Nähe verbringt.
Man muss sich jedoch im Klaren darüber sein, dass die Rasse durch die Zuchtgeschichte (Einkreuzung von Mops und Spaniel) gesundheitliche Risiken mitbringen kann. Ich habe extrem lange nach einem seriösen Züchter gesucht, der auf freie Atemwege und gesunde Gelenke achtet. Wegen der kurzen Schnauze muss man im Sommer bei Hitze etwas besser aufpassen, und auch die großen Augen erfordern regelmäßige Kontrolle. Wer sich dessen bewusst ist und konsequent erzieht, bekommt einen absolut loyalen Traumhund.

Ein kleiner Wermutstropfen ist allerdings die Seltenheit der Rasse. Es ist in Deutschland wirklich schwer, einen guten, eingetragenen Züchter zu finden, da pro Jahr nur wenige Würfe fallen. Man muss mit längeren Wartezeiten rechnen. Zudem sollte man rassetypische Erkrankungen wie Patellaluxation oder Syringomyelie im Hinterkopf behalten und die Elterntiere genau prüfen lassen. Wenn die Gesundheit stimmt, sind es wunderbar langlebige und agile Begleiter.
