The Ogar polski is considered a robust and primitive breed for which no strict mandatory health tests are currently registered. Nevertheless, buyers should be mindful of breed-specific vulnerabilities such as hip dysplasia (HD) and eyelid defects like entropion, which can occur in dogs of this size. Additionally, as with many larger breeds, there is a certain risk of life-threatening gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).

What matters most
Especially with a Ogar Polski, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
At home, the Ogar polski lies on the rug like a heavy, cozy bear, but in the forest, the scent of game immediately flips a switch. He is not a blind follower of commands, but an independent forest worker who will only follow you if you take his hunting nature seriously and provide him with enough mental stimulation. You will get a calm, gentle companion who, however, always has the final, very loud say when outdoors.
The Ogar Polski, also known as the Polish Hound, is a proud and powerful dog of medium size. With its proportional body dimensions and robust structure, it embodies the ideal working dog that combines both speed and endurance. Its fur is short and dense, but it lacks the undercoat typical of many dog breeds. His eyes are dark and have an expressive and intelligent look. The typical characteristic of the Ogar Polski is its long, broad ears, which lie close to the head and have a slightly rounded shape. The Ogar Polski belongs to FCI Group 6, the running and bloodhounds. This type of dog is characterized by its keen sense of smell and high endurance. It was specially trained and used to track game and locate injured or killed game. The Ogar Polski breed does not differentiate between performance and show lines, as these dogs were traditionally bred as working dogs rather than for exhibitions.
The Ogar Polski is a very old dog breed whose origins date back to the 13th century in Poland. It was originally used by nobles and large landowners to hunt deer and wild boar. These dogs were valued for their ability to follow a trail over long distances and even over several days. In the centuries that followed, the Ogar Polski developed into an indispensable aid in hunting and was also used by the common people to hunt small game. The breed was only officially recognized and standardized by the Polish Breeding Association in the 1960s. However, since the breed is mainly widespread in Poland and is rarely found outside the country, it is little known internationally.
The Ogar polski was bred to hunt wild boar and other large game species.

The Ogar Polski is a friendly and outgoing dog that builds a close bond with its caregiver. He is intelligent and quick to learn, which makes his work as a running and bloodhound easier. His keen sense of smell and desire to please his people make him an excellent working dog. His temperament is balanced. He is neither hyperactive nor overly calm, but likes to move and enjoy his work. His stamina allows him to go on long walks and jogs with you, but he is also happy with cozy hours at home. Although the Ogar Polski is an excellent hunting dog, he is a calm and even-tempered companion around the house. He can easily learn to stay alone as long as he gets used to it from the start. However, he should not be left alone for too long as he builds a close bond with his family and enjoys being around them. Its hunting instinct is strong, which should be taken into account when walking in forest areas. However, with appropriate education and training, he can learn to control this urge. A securely fenced garden is ideal for the Ogar Polski, as it allows him to live out his natural urge to move without being able to run away. The Ogar Polski is a very people-oriented dog that bonds closely with its caregivers and enjoys being around them. He is friendly with children and can be a great family dog if socialized properly. However, you should keep in mind that due to his passion for hunting and his need for exercise, he is not suitable for every household. He has a natural alert instinct and will react alertly to unusual noises or movements. However, he is not an aggressive dog and will usually only bark to get attention. With good socialization and training, he can learn to remain calm in such situations and not to react excessively. The Ogar Polski's upbringing is typically straightforward due to its intelligence and desire to please its people. He is a quick learner and responds well to positive reinforcement. However, his upbringing should be consistent and patient as he sometimes has a mind of his own. The price-performance ratio for an Ogar Polski puppy in Germany is usually around 800 euros, but can vary depending on the breeder and line. It is important to do your research before purchasing a puppy and choose a reputable breeder to ensure the puppy is healthy and well socialized. All in all, the Ogar Polski is a versatile and robust dog that cuts a fine figure both as a working dog and as a family dog. His friendly and adaptable nature makes him an ideal companion for active people and families.

Fun Fact!
Although the Ogar Polski is still relatively unknown in Germany, it is one of the national breeds in Poland and is also known there as the “Polish Hound”.
The Polish Hound is a persistent and intelligent hunting dog, especially valued for its excellent sense of smell. These dogs are active and require a lot of exercise as well as meaningful activities. They are friendly in interaction but also show a strong hunting instinct. The Polish Hound is well suited for experienced dog owners who want to encourage its energy and willingness to work.
The Ogar Polski is more suited to life in the country or in a house with a large garden due to its stamina and urge to move. A city apartment may be too cramped for him unless regular, long walks or jogs are undertaken. The Ogar Polski is friendly and good-natured towards children, so it can be a good choice for families. However, other pets, especially cats, can be problematic due to his hunting instincts. Early and good socialization is crucial here.
Loves family life and thrives in a group.
Takes boisterous and affectionate children in its stride.
Usually gets on fine with other dogs.
City-appropriate with enough exercise and stimulation.
Owning a dog is a privilege, but it's also a real responsibility. Before you bring one into your life, be honest with yourself about the commitment it takes.!
As an intelligent and willing dog to learn, the Ogar Polski is quite easy to raise and train. However, his passion for hunting and his strong urge to move must be taken into account. Therefore, it is important to promote his skills and potential through appropriate activities such as mantrailing or search games. However, you should be careful not to overwhelm the dog or turn it into a “ball junkie”. Impulse control and frustration tolerance are key skills that should be trained from the start in order to enable harmonious coexistence.
The Ogar Polski needs a balanced diet that covers its energy needs. As an active breed, they require a protein-rich diet that provides enough energy for their physical activity. Fruit and vegetables, as well as enough fresh water, should also be part of your daily diet. Grooming the Ogar Polski is relatively easy as its coat is short and dense, but without an undercoat. Regular brushing will help remove loose hair and keep the coat healthy. The Ogar Polski sheds moderately and is therefore also suitable for people with mild allergies.
| Care Level Minimal effort — occasional brushing and bathing. | Low-maintenance |
| Exercise Needs Needs several hours of serious exercise every day. | Very active |
| Shedding Regular shedding — dog hair on clothes is now normal. | Moderate |

Was die Erziehung angeht, darf man keinen Schäferhund-Gehorsam erwarten.
