Mein Manchester Terrier ist im Haus ein absoluter Traum und schläft fast so viel wie eine Katze. Er liebt es, sich an mich zu kuscheln, und ist extrem menschenbezogen. Sobald wir aber draußen sind, merkt man sofort, dass in ihm ein echter Terrier mit 'großem T' steckt.
Sein Jagdtrieb ist enorm – er reagiert blitzschnell auf Sicht und Spur, besonders bei Katzen, Mäusen und Vögeln. Ohne Leine laufen lassen ist bei uns im Wald absolut unmöglich, weshalb die Schleppleine unser ständiger Begleiter ist. Man darf diese Rasse draußen einfach keine Sekunde aus den Augen lassen.
Ein weiteres Thema ist seine Wachsamkeit. Wenn es an der Tür klingelt oder er ungewöhnliche Geräusche im Treppenhaus hört, schlägt er sofort an und bellt. Auch Fremden gegenüber ist er anfangs sehr distanziert und misstrauisch. Wer einen unkomplizierten, immer freundlichen 'Mitläufer-Hund' sucht, unterschätzt diese anspruchsvolle Rasse leicht.

Ich habe mich damals in die elegante Optik verliebt – er sieht ja wirklich aus wie ein Dobermann im Kleinformat. Er braucht extrem viel Beschäftigung und Kopfarbeit. Wenn wir nur eine normale Runde um den Block drehen und ihn geistig nicht fordern, sucht er sich selbst eine Aufgabe – und das bedeutet meistens, dass er im Garten gräbt oder Dinge anknabbert. Man muss bei der Erziehung von Anfang an absolut konsequent bleiben, sonst tanzt einem dieser kleine, selbstständige Jäger ganz schnell auf der Nase herum.
Ein wichtiger Punkt im Winter: Durch das kurze, glatte Fell ohne schützende Unterwolle friert er sehr schnell. Bei nasskaltem Schmuddelwetter mag er gar nicht gerne raus und wir müssen ihn mit einem Mantel schützen, damit er sich nicht erkältet. Dafür ist die Fellpflege im Alltag genial einfach, da er kaum haart.

Man muss sich vor der Anschaffung einfach im Klaren sein, dass man keinen 'Schoßhund' bekommt, sondern einen waschechten, blitzschnellen Arbeitshund, der eine klare Führung braucht. Wenn man diese Zeit und Arbeit investiert, bekommt man einen unfassbar treuen und loyalen Partner.
