History
The Kromfohrländer has an interesting and relatively short history. The breed originated in Germany and emerged after the Second World War. A woman named Ilse Schleifenbaum found a mixed-breed dog in the war zones in France and took him with her to Germany. This dog, named "Peter", was a cross between Fox Terrier and Grand Griffon Vend"en and became the basis for the new breed. Ilse Schleifenbaum crossed Peter with a dog named Fifi, who probably had Fox Terrier blood. The offspring of this pairing were carefully selected and further bred to create the Kromfohrländer. In 1955 the Kromfohrländer was recognized as an independent breed by the FCI. Today the Kromfohrländer is still relatively well known in Germany, while it is rather rare in other parts of the world.

Als wir uns für einen Kromfohrländer entschieden haben, dachten wir, wir bekommen den perfekten, unkomplizierten Familienhund. In den Züchterbeschreibungen klang alles so einfach. Unser Rüde ist auch wirklich extrem schlau, lernt unglaublich schnell und hat so gut wie keinen Jagdtrieb. Er ist sehr anhänglich und weicht uns draußen kaum von der Seite.
Allerdings kam mit der Pubertät die große Überraschung: Aus dem offenen Welpen wurde ein sehr reservierter und teils extrem unsicherer Hund. Er hat enorme Probleme im Sozialkontakt mit fremden Hunden entwickelt und fängt an der Leine oft an zu pöbeln. Er braucht eine sehr konsequente, ruhige Führung, sonst neigt er schnell dazu, Besucher lautstark zu verbellen. Man darf die Erziehung bei dieser Rasse wirklich nicht unterschätzen – die Sensibilität schlägt schnell in Unsicherheit oder Abwehrverhalten um.

Ich habe einen Glatthaar-Kromi und bin absolut verliebt in sein Wesen, auch wenn er mich manchmal an meine Grenzen bringt. Er ist extrem aktiv und manchmal regelrecht hektisch und aufgedreht. Der Terrier in ihm kommt definitiv durch! Er will überall dabei sein und braucht viel geistige Beschäftigung, lernt dafür aber auch Tricks in Rekordzeit.
Was man vor dem Kauf unbedingt wissen muss, ist die gesundheitliche Situation der Rasse. Da die Kromis auf einer sehr kleinen Ursprungspopulation basieren, ist der Inzuchtkoeffizient extrem hoch. Wir hatten leider schon mit autoimmunbedingten Hautproblemen zu kämpfen. Man muss sich wirklich sehr genau mit der Zuchtlinie auseinandersetzen und darf das Thema Erbkrankheiten wie Epilepsie oder Autoimmunerkrankungen beim Welpenkauf nicht totschweigen.

Wir haben von Anfang an extrem viel Wert auf eine gute Sozialisierung gelegt, um ihrer angeborenen Ängstlichkeit entgegenzuwirken. Kromis neigen dazu, in neuen Situationen schnell unsicher zu werden. Wenn man hier nicht von klein auf mit viel Geduld und positiver Bestärkung gegensteuert, kann sich diese Unsicherheit schnell in Angst-Aggressivität verwandeln. Sie sind eben keine Mitläufer-Hunde, sondern sensible Persönlichkeiten.
