What matters most
Especially with a Cretan Hound, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
A Kritikos Lagonikos is like a coiled spring that only releases in open terrain. He gives you his heart completely, but remains a piece of nature that never fully submits. If you respect this pride, you will gain a loyal shadow—if you try to break him, you will lose him instantly.
The Kritikos Lagonikos is an ancient Greek dog breed, primarily valued as a guard and herding dog. With its strong, muscular build and dense, weather-resistant coat, it is well adapted to the harsh climate and demanding conditions of the Greek island of Crete. Characteristic features include its erect ears, almond-shaped eyes, and bushy tail, which is often carried over the back. The Kritikos Lagonikos is known for its vigilance, loyalty, and strong protective instinct towards family and property. Similar to other working dogs, there are variations within the breed regarding temperament and appearance, which can vary depending on the bloodline. Overall, the Kritikos Lagonikos is a reliable and courageous companion, especially suitable for experienced dog owners seeking a confident and independent dog.
The Kritikos Lagonikos, also known as the Cretan Hound, is considered one of the oldest dog breeds in Europe. Its origins can be traced back to antiquity, with archaeological findings from the Minoan civilization—dating from approximately 3000 to 1000 BC—depicting dogs of this primitive type on wall paintings and ceramics. Over millennia, the breed developed in isolation on the Greek island of Crete. The original and still primary purpose of the Kritikos Lagonikos is hunting hares and rabbits in the rugged, rocky, and inaccessible terrain of its homeland. This specialized hunting dog utilizes a combination of excellent eyesight, a keen sense of smell, and sharp hearing. Unlike livestock guardian dogs, with which it was often mistakenly confused in the past, it is a pure sighthound and hunting dog valued for its immense agility and endurance. The harsh natural selection on Crete shaped an extremely robust and resilient working dog. Although the breed looks back on a history spanning thousands of years, modern cynological registration began late. In 2003, the Kritikos Lagonikos was officially recognized at the national level by the Greek Kennel Club (KOE). In Germany, national recognition by the VDH followed in 2014, where it is classified as a primitive breed.
