What matters most
Especially with a Croatian Sheepdog, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
A Hrvatski Ovcar is like a high-revving sports car with no neutral gear — he is always ready to accelerate from zero to a hundred in an instant. You aren't getting a laid-back companion, but an extremely loyal workaholic who will anticipate your every wish, provided you give him a real job to do.
The Hrvatski Ovcar, also known as the Croatian Shepherd, is a medium-sized dog with a stocky and muscular build. Its fur is short, thick and has a dense undercoat that protects it from extreme weather conditions. The coat color is consistently black, with occasional white markings on the chest and paws being tolerated. Its head is proportional to the body with a pronounced stop, medium-sized ears that stand erect, and dark, almond-shaped eyes that exude a deep intelligence and alertness. The Hrvatski Ovcar is listed in FCI Group 1: Herding Dogs and Cattle Dogs (excluding Swiss Mountain Dogs), Section 1: Shepherd Dogs. In contrast to many other dog breeds, the Hrvatski Ovcar does not differentiate between performance lines and show lines, as the breed is bred primarily for its suitability for work.
The Hrvatski Ovcar is an ancient breed originating from Croatia. While the exact history of the breed remains unknown, it is believed to descend from local dogs that have been kept by Croatian farmers and shepherds as working dogs for centuries. The breed was first described in 1935 by veterinarian Dr. Stjepan Romic, who gave the dogs the name "Hrvatski Ovcar," meaning "Croatian Sheepdog." The breed was officially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1969. Today, the Hrvatski Ovcar is known and valued in Croatia and parts of Europe as a capable working dog and a reliable family companion.

The Hrvatski Ovcar is known for its intelligence, loyal nature and willingness to work. Originally it was used for guarding and herding and these characteristics are still deeply anchored in its DNA today. He is always alert and always ready to protect his family and territory, making him an excellent watchdog. His strong work ability and his Endurance makes the Hrvatski Ovcar an ideal companion for active people who like to spend a lot of time in nature. Although he has a strong herding habit, with the right socialization and training he can live well in a family that meets his needs for mental and physical exercise. When dealing with his family, the Hrvatski Ovcar is very people-oriented and affectionate. He enjoys the company of his caregivers and is always ready to be at their side. He proves to be very adaptable and can adapt well to different life situations. The Hrvatski Ovcar can initially be reserved and cautious when dealing with strangers and animals. It is therefore important to socialize him well from an early age and to give him positive encounters with different people, animals and environments. This way he can learn that new situations and encounters are nothing to worry about. In terms of temperament, the Hrvatski Ovcar is rather calm and balanced. He is not hyperactive, but still very active and needs regular physical and mental activity. His intelligence and willingness to learn make him a versatile working dog that can be used in many areas, such as herding, dog sports or as a therapy dog. A typical behavior of the Hrvatski Ovcar is its pronounced hunting and prey-catching behavior. It was originally used to guard flocks of sheep and also had to ward off predators. This behavior is still evident today and it is therefore important to take this into account when keeping and training the dog. However, a Hrvatski Ovcar that is well behaved and exercised can control this behavior well. In conclusion, the Hrvatski Ovcar is a wonderful companion for active people who can meet the requirements and needs of this breed.
