The history of the Gonczy Polski (Polish Hunting Dog) is deeply rooted in Poland's hunting traditions. It is largely thanks to the cynologist Józef Pawłusiewicz that the Gonczy Polski was saved from extinction. He gathered the remaining dogs in southern Poland and established a systematic breeding program. Unlike the heavier Ogar Polski, international recognition for the Gonczy Polski took significantly longer. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) granted the breed provisional recognition in 2006 and finally confirmed it as a distinct breed in 2017.

Er ist im Wald absolut unermüdlich und zeigt eine tolle, ausdauernde Fährtenarbeit.
Was mich im Alltag aber fast noch mehr begeistert, ist sein absolut ruhiges und ausgeglichenes Grundwesen im Haus. Er ist extrem führerbezogen und sucht immer meine Nähe, ohne dabei aufdringlich zu sein. Zu Hause ist er die Ruhe selbst und kann sich wunderbar entspannen.
Man darf diese Rasse aber auf keinen Fall unterschätzen. Ein Gonczy ist ein hochspezialisierter Arbeitshund, der eine konsequente Hand braucht. Wenn er nicht jagdlich oder durch intensive Nasenarbeit gefordert wird, neigt er schnell dazu, sich in sich selbst zurückzuziehen oder unerwünschte Verhaltensweisen zu entwickeln. Er ist definitiv kein Hund für ein reines Niederwildrevier oder gar als reiner Begleithund im Park.
