Relative to other breeds
The Gonczy Polski is a very robust hunting breed with an excellent health foundation, for which no specific genetic tests are required. Nevertheless, breeding dogs should be screened for hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED) to prevent joint issues. Due to their pendulous ears, there is also a slightly increased risk of ear infections (otitis externa), which can be easily managed with proper care.

What matters most
Especially with a Polish Hunting Dog, choosing the right breeder is the single most important decision you'll make. Serious breeders consistently test the parents for inherited conditions, prioritize healthy early socialization, and stay accountable long after handover. A cheap puppy without health screening tends to become the most expensive dog later on.

The real vibes check
Inside the house, the Gonczy Polski is often a calm, almost invisible shadow—but as soon as it picks up a trail outside, it flips a switch and becomes a tireless machine. You aren't buying a dog that lives to please you, but a highly specialized forest worker. If you give it a real job, you will have the most loyal partner by your side; if not, it will definitely find its own work.
The Gonczy Polski, also known as the Polish Hound, is a medium-sized dog with a strong, muscular build. Its expression is lively and intelligent, with dark, oval eyes and medium-sized, high-set ears that hang slightly. Its coat is thick and smooth, with a well-developed undercoat that protects it from the elements. The FCI classifies it in Group 6: Hounds, Scenthounds and related breeds. Although the Gonczy Polski is a fairly uniform breed, there are some differences in size and structure between dogs bred primarily for hunting and those kept more as companion dogs. However, these differences are not as pronounced as in some other breeds, where a distinction is made between performance and show lines.
The history of the Gonczy Polski (Polish Hunting Dog) is deeply rooted in Poland's hunting traditions. The first written references to hunting with scent hounds in Polish territories date back to the 13th century. Detailed descriptions of these resilient hunting dogs, specifically bred for demanding work in dense forests and mountainous terrain, appear in 19th-century literature. Their original and enduring purpose is persistent tracking and vocal hunting of ungulates, particularly wild boar and deer. Following the devastating impact of World War II, the breed's population was severely depleted. It is largely thanks to the cynologist Józef Pawłusiewicz that the Gonczy Polski was saved from extinction. He gathered the remaining dogs in southern Poland and established a systematic breeding program. Unlike the heavier Ogar Polski, international recognition for the Gonczy Polski took significantly longer. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) granted the breed provisional recognition in 2006 and finally confirmed it as a distinct breed in 2017.
The Gonczy Polski was bred as a hunting dog for tracking game in difficult terrain, renowned for its stamina and keen sense of smell.

The Gonczy Polski is an independent and confident dog with a strong hunting instinct. He is known for his endurance and keen sense of smell, making him an excellent hunting dog. Despite his independence, he is very people-oriented and forms a strong bond with his family. He is a loyal and affectionate companion who responds well to positive reinforcement. Compared to some other hunting dog breeds, the Gonczy Polski is rather calm and balanced. He is not hyperactive and can relax well when he is not working. However, he is not a couch potato and needs enough exercise and mental stimulation every day. The Gonczy Polski is a very alert dog and is therefore well suited as a guard dog. He is reserved towards strangers without being aggressive and will bravely protect his family if he feels they are being threatened. He is also good with children and other dogs provided he is properly socialized. The Gonczy Polski has a natural inclination to hunt and catch prey. Although with the right training he can learn to control his hunting instincts, you should always be careful when letting him run free in areas with a lot of game. Although he is generally good at being left alone, he should not be left unoccupied for long periods of time as he may become bored and develop unwanted behavior. Overall, the Gonczy Polski is a versatile and adaptable dog that can excel both as a hunting dog and as a family companion. He needs consistent but loving leadership and is best suited to active people who are willing to devote enough time to his training and employment. With proper socialization and leadership, the Gonczy Polski can be a wonderful and loyal companion.
